Victoria, British Columbia Members of the Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC), parade in front of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in Victoria, as the Navy exercises itsâ?? right to the freedom of the city. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, Maritime Forces Pacific was granted Freedom of the City in Victoria on Tuesday, May 4th, Canadian Navy Centennial Day. The celebratory parade dates back to the laws of ancient Rome that made it a capital offence for Roman legions to enter the city in formation or with weapons without permission. Martial groups that had given heroic service or whose honour was beyond question could receive "Freedom of the City" and enter the city without having to disarm or break ranks. Today, martial freedom of the city is an entirely ceremonial honour, but remains the oldest and one of the highest civic honours in Commonwealth Nations. Maritime Forces Pacific was previously granted "Freedom of the City" of Victoria in 1985 in recognition of the Navy's 75th anniversary. The Freedom of the City parade was part of the Canadian Navy Centennial celebrations organized to mark this significant moment in Canada's naval history within the context of the centennial theme of "Bring the Navy to Canadians." Events are aimed at honouring the past, showcasing the current navy and reinforcing the requirement for the future navy.
