Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Michael M. Garuk
CPO1 Michael M Garuk is a Marine Engine Room Artificer who was born in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1971. Moving around Canada throughout his youth, he finally settled in Victoria British Columbia which he considers home.
He joined the CF under the Marine Engineering Technician Training Program in 1990 earning a diploma from St. Lawrence College in Marine Engineering Controls and Instrumentation. During the program he trained on HMC Ships MARGAREE and ASSINIBOINE and upon graduation he was posted west to HMCS HURON. Over the next ten years he served on and completed the coastal transfers of HMC Ships HURON and ALGONQUIN. He also completed two shore postings to Canadian Forces Fleet School Esquimalt, once as a Gas Turbine Instructor and the second as a Recruit Instructor. In 2003 he deployed to ROTO 5 of OP SCULPTURE and upon return, was re-assigned to HPD east. On the east coast he first served on HMCS FREDERICTON where he took part in OP CHABANEL and OP CARRIBE prior to a brief shore posting to HMCS SCOTIAN. After promotion to CPO2 in 2007, he sailed briefly as Chief Engine Room Artificer on HMCS FREDERICTON shortly before he was posted to HMCS TORONTO in March 2008, in the same role until Apr 2010. Posted to Ottawa in 2010 as the MAR ENG JR Career Manager he was moved to the MAR ENG SR Career Manager in 2011 after promotion to CPO1. He was inducted into the Order of Military Merit 8 Jun 2012. CPO1 Garuk was appointed to his current position of Coxswain of HMCS FREDERICTON 30 Jul 2012.
CPO1 Garuk`s service spouse of 14 years resides in Ottawa, Ontario with his two children. He enjoys bicycling, hiking and travelling.
