Canadian Navy: HMCS OTTAWA - Sailor Profiles

Leading Seaman Christopher Meredith

My name is LS Christopher Meredith.  I am 23 years old and I was born in Dartmouth N.S.  I've been in the Navy for three and a half years as a boatswain.  Some of my duties onboard HMCS OTTAWA are looking after ship’s rescue boats, and maintaining small arms such as C7s, and .50 cal machine guns.  I am also involved in replenishments at sea which can include everything from fuelling, light and heavy jackstay transfers and towing.  A couple of my secondary duties include demolitions team and ship’s rigger.  Typical days consist of preventative maintenance for some of the ship’s fitted equipment, ship’s husbandry and small arms rounds, as well as training evolutions to keep our trade knowledge fresh in our minds.  I've sailed in HMCS OTTAWA for 3 years, and have also had the opportunity to sail onboard HMCS PROTECTEUR and HMCS VANCOUVER

My family played a big part in why I joined the Navy.  Most of the men in my family have been, and continue to be part of the Navy, including my dad CPO2 Eric Meredith a cook at CFB Esquimalt.  Also my uncle, CPO2 Richard Meredith is currently posted to NDHQ Ottawa as a boatswain.  PO2 Darren Thuirer is a Sonar Op posted to Halifax and my grandfather Darrol Thuirer is a retired Chief Marine Engineer. My Grandfather Keith Cornish was in the British Navy and was also a boatswain. As you can see, there is a lot of history in the Navy for my family, it’s almost like a family tradition, and that’s why I'm here.

One of the most memorable moments I had in the Navy is when I had the chance to sail with my dad in HMCS PROTECTEUR.  With the support from my family, friends and wife, being away is a breeze.  This allows me to enjoy my job, and will hopefully lead me to my goal of being Chief Boatswain’s Mate in a ship one day.  I have had many civilian jobs in the past, in construction, sales and farming and although many were very fun, none compare to what this job has to offer.  I would have never imagined having any of the opportunities I have today such as seeing the world for free, buying a house at my age, and just having the confidence and pride in my job. I always encourage my friends to give the Navy a shot.  With the places you get to see, the people you meet, and the different day to day experiences, what more would you want from a job?  Of course I get questions like: “Really, you’re in the Navy?  I didn’t even know we had a Navy” but once I get the chance to explain what I do, it only gives me more pride in what the Navy represents.  Having the chance to participate in the 100 year anniversary topped it all off.  Marching in a city that I love, with my dad, cousin and wife - nothing can beat what I do.
