Lieutenant-Commander Andy MacKenzie was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo. After his third year of studies, he enrolled as an Officer-Cadet in the 11th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery as an Artillery Officer where upon graduation in 1996, he transferred to the Regular Force as a MARS Officer.
In 1997, LCdr MacKenzie began his naval career at NOTC Venture where he was fortunate to partake in HMCS Oriole’s historic participation in Tall Ships 1998 in and around the waters of Australia and New Zealand.
LCdr MacKenzie was posted to HMCS Toronto for his BWK, C of C II training and subsequent employment as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. The completion of his tour coincided with the opening of Victoria Class basic submarine training to MARS officers where he was finally able to volunteer for the ‘Silent Service’, a pursuit that has been LCdr MacKenzie’s life-long ambition.
LCdr MacKenzie joined HMCS Victoria in 2003 for work-ups, transit to Esquimalt, British Columbia and subsequent operations in the MARPAC operating areas. Completing his tour as SONAR Officer in 2005, LCdr MacKenzie successfully challenged the Royal Australian Navy’s Submarine Warfare Officer’s Course and was posted on completion back to Halifax as the Combat Officer of HMCS Windsor.
In 2006, LCdr MacKenzie was appointed as A/Executive Officer of WINDSOR and remained with her until she entered her Extended Docking Work Period in 2007 when he was posted to the Submarine Training Division of the Canadian Forces Naval Operations School.
In July of 2008, LCdr MacKenzie graduated from the Royal Australian Navy’s Submarine Executive Officer’s Course and was appointed Executive Officer of HMCS Corner Brook in August 2008. He completed his tour in December 2009 and in March 2010, LCdr MacKenzie graduated from the United States Navy Submarine Command Course. Finally, he had the pleasure of graduating from the Norwegian Submarine Command Course, known as Perisher, in April 2011 and was honoured by being appointed Commanding Officer of WINDSOR in May 2011.
Andy resides in Bedford with his wife Natalie, their children Meghan, Brett, and Blake as well as the family’s Black Labrador, Earl.
