AIR DEPARTMENT

The purpose of the Air Department on board HMCS WINNIPEG is to enhance her operational capability through various roles.  The Air Department consists of a Sikorsky S-61 Sea King helicopter, aircrew to operate the aircraft and technicians to maintain the aircraft.

            The primary role of the CH-124 Sea King is to act in concert with ship board sensors to seek out and destroy submarines at long distances from ships.  In addition, the Sea King is also capable of carrying out Medevac transfers, search and rescue missions as well as providing a helicopter delivery service to enhance HMCS WINNIPEG’s logistical capabilities.

            The Sea King is an all-weather helicopter capable of operating in both day and night from HMCS WINNIPEG’s deck in sea conditions up to sea state 6.
